What this site keeps about you
Plain language, and the whole of it.
Short version: no accounts, no cookies, no ads, nothing that follows you to other sites. One Memory keeps what you choose to leave, and that is public.
Every page
Cloudflare hosts this site. Like any web host, Cloudflare sees your IP address and browser details when you load a page.
One Memory
When you leave a memory, the album stores:
- where you stood: your position, which way you faced and how far you tilted the camera,
- the walk that led there: your position about four times a second, at most about 400 points,
- your caption, the nearest place name, the time it was saved and which version of the island it was on.
All of that is public. It is the album: anyone can see your photo (rendered from where you stood), your caption, and a hiker retracing your walk.
Two more things are kept, and they are not public:
- Your browser keeps a random token it made up, and the id of your memory, in its local storage. The server stores only a hash of the token. That is how it knows this browser has already left a memory, and how you can delete yours.
- To keep one network from filling the album (three memories a day) and to count reports, the server keeps a salted hash of your network address, never the address itself, and deletes it after about a day.
When you save or report a memory, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that you're a person. Its code runs in your browser at that moment, not before. Cloudflare's privacy policy covers it.
Deleting and reporting
- Delete your memory: open One Memory in the same browser and press Delete my memory. It is gone for good. If you've cleared that browser's data, email me roughly when and where you took it and I'll remove it.
- Report someone else's: press Report under the photo. When people on several networks report a memory, it leaves the album until I've looked at it.
